The Workhorse of the Battle of Britain

The Spitfire may get the glory, but it was the Hawker Hurricane that shot down more enemy aircraft in the Battle of Britain than every other defence combined. Rugged, forgiving and easy to repair, it was the backbone of Fighter Command in 1940. The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is supporting Wings & Wheels with a fly-past, and with the Hurricane operating for the 2026 season, it could be the aircraft we see over Fenland Airfield — the RAF confirms which aircraft is flying closer to the event.

The BBMF maintains eleven historic aircraft in airworthy condition as a "museum without walls" — a living tribute to all those who have lost their lives serving with the RAF. Its motto: Lest We Forget.

The Flight's Two Hurricanes

The BBMF proudly flies two Hurricanes of 1944 vintage — if a Hurricane joins the fly-past, which one we see will depend on the Flight's schedule:

Mk IIC LF363 — the founding fighter

Among the last Hurricanes to enter RAF service, LF363 flew shipping-protection and reconnaissance patrols before the end of the war. Rescued from the scrapheap in 1949, she led that year's Battle of Britain flypast over London, and in 1957 became a founding aircraft of the Flight itself. Rebuilt after a serious engine-failure crash in 1991, she flies today in the colours of 303 (Polish) Squadron — the top-scoring squadron of the Battle of Britain.

Mk IIC PZ865 — 'The Last of the Many'

The very last Hurricane ever built, of 14,533, PZ865 rolled off the Hawker line in July 1944 with 'The Last of the Many' painted on her sides. In 1950 she came second in the King's Cup Air Race, entered by HRH Princess Margaret and flown by Group Captain Peter Townsend. Presented to the BBMF in 1972, she now wears the all-black night-fighter scheme of a 247 Squadron Hurricane that defended Plymouth and Exeter by night.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is supporting Wings & Wheels on Sunday 30th August 2026 with a fly-past. Which aircraft takes part — Spitfire, Hurricane or Dakota — and the exact timing are confirmed by the RAF a couple of days before the event, and we'll share the details as soon as we know.

Fly-pasts are subject to weather and aircraft serviceability, and may be cancelled at short notice.
